I’ve been to Wisconsin countless times, and there is so much hidden beauty in this Northern state. This was our first time up in Door County and we loved it. Our friends decided to set up a little getaway for the weekend and it was absolutely gorgeous! Although because it’s a colder season, the snow and weather caused some areas to shut down, but we were still able to enjoy Mother Nature. We are definitely coming back in the summer, there is so much to do there with stunning views and all reasonably priced!

How do you get there? It’s about a 4 hour drive from the suburbs of Chicago, which actually goes by quick especially if you don’t make any stops. Because of its location and it being away from big cities, we recommend trying to get there by sunset since the streets are not lit at night.

We stayed in this cute 3 bedroom Airbnb. You can find details on it here. Two things we loved about the house, the location and how equipped the house is. The house itself seems brand new, with the cutest interior and exterior. It even included kayak boats and bikes.

  • When: The Airbnb is available year round, but I would recommend coming in the warmer seasons

  • Where: It’s on Northwoods Drive in Sister’s Bay. The location is great, it’s literally 5 minutes away from small town restaurants and the State Peninsula Park, which hosts all of the activities to do around the lake including kayaking, boating, and hiking

  • Cost: It costed us about $130 a night, which was reasonable for 4 families to split

  • Duration: We spent 2 nights and 1.5 days, which was great for winter. For better weather, I would recommend at least 2 full days and 2 nights (1 day per activity whether it’s water activities, hiking or biking trails).

  • Tips: Bring all your groceries since the nearest Walmart is about an hour away, plus you’ll want to maximize your time once you’re there. Bring Lysol or disinfectant wipes, it helps since we found our Airbnb clean, but slightly dusty. I’m not a fan of plastic utensils and plates, but if you are going to be cooking for a lot of people it would be helpful to bring. S’mores is a great addition to your grocery list since they have a really nice bonfire setup! They also have a grill and all the materials necessary. The kitchen is fully equipped with quality cooking gear and even spices. It’s a baby friendly house, so they have high chairs and a playpen as well. If you’re planning to have a few people sleep in the living room, pack an air mattress (or use the mattress they have in the attic—it’s a nice attic, everything was very tidy!) and extra pillows and blankets.

  • Personal Experience: We loved this little house! It was spacious, decorated nicely, and the beautiful windows everywhere allowed us to really enjoy the view. The outdoor deck has a grill and leads to a bonfire pit. If it weren’t for snow, we would have spent much more of our time outdoors right in the backyard of the house. Even in the cold weather, we were able to enjoy a nice cozy setup by the bonfire and had the best s’mores we’ve had in a while. The fully equipped kitchen came in clutch since we all enjoy cooking. For the most part, we planned our meals to be home cooked and because it’s easier to stay in with young children. We plan on coming back in the summer to fully utilize the house and area nearby!

State Peninsula Park is so stunning. It’s surrounded by gorgeous blue water, which you can see right through! We were grateful to be able to witness some of the fall foliage in this cold weather. There were golden leaves falling everywhere, sunlight peeking through the trees, it was beautiful. Perfect for photo opportunities, a little detox, and outdoor adventures!

Cave Point County Park was one of the most beautiful waterfronts I’ve seen in all of Wisconsin. There are mini caves carved right into the cliffs by water and it’s absolutely stunning. Because it was cold, we took some cute photos and celebrated a little birthday there, but next time hopefully we can spend some more time closer to the water doing some of these activities:

If it hadn’t gotten so cold, there were a couple of cool sites in the area that we wanted to check out and will probably do so next time we’re back:

We loved the food scene here especially for the local and famous cheese by Wisconsin. You’ll find it to be the creamiest and the most flavorful! Here’s a couple of restaurants that are on our list:
